So in 2 weeks I'll be finished with my exams, which are a pretty big milestone cos I've been working towards them for 2 years. This summer, I will have a lot of free time and I want to start reading again, as I haven't had the time because I usually read on the train, but this was unfortunately replaced by revision. I'm 18 yrs old, and I was hoping maybe you guys could recommend me books? I have a really specific type of books I like, but I'll list some I liked below:

    • Magpie Murders – Anthony Horowitz
    • The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trilogy (Millenium) – Stieg Larsson
    • Deception Point – Dan Brown
    • The Thursday Murder Club – Richard Osman
    • Holes – Louis Sachar
    • Private Peaceful – Michael Morpurgo
    • The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tips – Michael Morpurgo
    • Listen to the Moon – Michael Morpurgo
    • Revolver – Marcus Sedgewick
    • Of Mice and Men – John Steinbeck
    • Grapes of Wrath – John Steinbeck

I know, it's a varied bunch! The thing is I've always been on and off with reading, and books stay with me for lots of different reasons. It's been 10 years since I read those Michael Morpurgo books, but they have a special place for me because those were the first books I picked to read myself, and I don't know why but I still remember the stories even to this day! Crime novels like Magpie Murders and Thursday Murder Club stuck with me because yes they were thrilling as a crime story to read, but the multi-layered stories, often involving multiple different generations all of whom have stories to hide just makes those crime novels so much more interesting. The multi-layered aspect is also why I loved Holes. I'm not sure why I loved the Millenium trilogy so much, but what I do remember is that they were real page-turners (trust me there were times where I preferred to read those books over playing on the Xbox!). I'm not really sure why I still have an obsession with Revolver… I've loved John Steinbeck because his stories are always well-told and there's always great food for thought behind them.

Right, that's the end of my essay! It seems to me that I like thought-provoking books, multi-layered crime, stories that can be so upsetting they stay on your mind for 10 years (Private Peaceful is real tear-jerker)…I know I'm genuinely just dumping all my memories from reading, but I really want to start reading again seriously, it's one of the things I've missed a lot. So what do you guys think I should read over the summer?
