So my late grandmother was Irish but she died before I was born and I really want to learn about her home country. In England we didn’t really learn much if anything about Ireland in school so I don’t even know where to start. Any book from ancient history to modern day would be very much appreciated. Anything that’ll help me learn about my grandmothers home! Thank you all in advance for anything you can suggest!!

How the Irish Saved Civilization by Thomas Cahill. I thought it would be a gimmicky book, but it actually was a quite entertaining history of medieval Ireland.

The Graves are Walking by John Kelly. 19th century socio-political conditions, the famine, and the mass exodus to America that brought my family from Cork.

    2. A rapid introduction could be : ‘A Pocket History of Ireland’ by Joseph Mc Cullough.

On the more academic side, there is ‘Ireland : a History’ by Thomas Bartlett.
