I love super depressing books, being a mentally ill man, they make me feel understood and provide a certain sense of solace. In an odd way- they actually make me feel better, if that makes any sense. I wonder, do any of you feel the same way? Do you enjoy depressing books and what makes a book depressing for you, personally?

I’ll start- there’s a couple I’d like to mention. First off, **Infinite Jest** which I’ve only recently finished, was at the same time laugh-out-loud hilarious, super bleak, and full of despair in a way that leaves you completely numb by the end, like Hal. I think the dark dystopian near-future setting also did a lot of heavy lifting in that sense, but mostly, it was the characters and their relationships and the way they communicate that made it so uniquely dark. I really want to experience something like it again.

Another one I’d like to mention is **A Little Life**, which doesn’t feel realistic but I sincerely don’t care because of how good it was. I could relate to almost every single character to the point where they felt like real people to me. Harold’s words at the end made me cry, ngl.

So, friends, what book made you feel completely numb or bawl your eyes out by the end?
