I just finished The Fury and I enjoyed it! Honestly, I didn’t love either of Michaelides other novels, The Silent Patient and The Maidens. But, since I’m a psychotherapist with an abiding fascination with Greek mythology and Classical plays/poetry, who loves murder mysteries, I can’t just NOT read him, his books feel like they’re written specifically for me!
The Fury was funnier, punchier and much tighter than his first two novels. Yes, the teasing narrator thing was over-the-top, but, I also found it clever and self-aware, very meta and fun. It has the same classical themes, Freudian angles and cameos from his other novels as Michaelides’ previous work and adds a level of satire that I hope he brings into his future work. Check it out!
