I see this trope in books way too much: A character is stressed, scared, angry, upset, etc. and they make a fist and then discover afterwards that they held their fist so tight their fingernails cut into their palm making it bleed. Usually the character has to notice the blood afterwards as they of course couldn’t feel it at the time. Often authors like to use phrases about crescent moons of blood or some such nonsense as well.

I have been upset and scared in my life and clenched my fists but have never made my hand actually bleed. I’ve never heard of this happening in real life to anyone. Am I just the one person who has never encountered this in life, does everyone else walking around with razor sharp fingernails, or are authors all consistently using an unrealistic trope?
