I have never really been in to the horror genre in general but I think that might be because my main exposure to it has been movies.

I don’t really see the appeal of jumpscares (although this obviously doesn’t translate to books) and just general monsters/creepiness doesn’t really interest me. But since starting to read consistently again I’ve tried to be more open to different genres.

This month I’ve, by chance, ended up with Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (plus other short stories), Frankenstein, and Dracula in my pile. I have some of the short stories and Dracula left but so far I’ve been really surprised at how much I’ve enjoyed them.

They didn’t seem like horrors as I have ever thought of them but much more introspective than I thought. Much less about monsters and much more about people, while I imagine there’s a wide range of horrors out there I’d love to find some more with this sort of vibe (reccomendations aren’t the point of this but they’re always welcome)

I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience of subverted expectations, with horror or any other genre?
