The polarization goes much further back that 10-20 years. It’s just coming to a head now.
{{Why We’re Polarized by Ezra Klein}}
{{The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion by Jonathan Haidt}}
This one isn’t specific to US politics, but gives good insight into politics and polarization in general: {{How Civil Wars Start: And How to Stop Them by Barbara F. Walter}}. It does talk about how the US is no longer the longest running democracy as we dipped out of “strong democracy” sometime during the Trump admin. There’s a polity scale of -10 to 10 (full authoritarian to full democracy) and the most dangerous place to be for any country is -5 to 5 as different factions fight for power, tipping the country further one direction or the other.

It’s going back more than 20 years but you could try Prequel by Rachel Maddow.
I’ve heard good things about “Tyranny of the Minority”.
