    Hey,

Looking for some suggestions on some modern (21st century ideally, but could be 20th too) classics (i.e. acclaimed, important, influential etc. novels). I get that this is pretty subjective, especially for newer releases, so here’re some of my all time favorite novels:

The Sun Also Rises, Martin Eden, Flowers for Algernon, Black Obelisk, Ubik, 1984, Steppenwolf, The Master and Margarita, Slaughterhouse-Five, The Crying of Lot 49, The Trial and The Castle, The Plague,…

Generally just looking for something well written, captivating and ideally new/modern but with that same oomph that all those classics have (but if you have some suggestions based on my faves you think I’ll like, even if they’re not modern, you’re more than welcome to write them down!); bonus points if it’s <500 pages.

    Thanks!

The Handmaid’s Tale, I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings, Beloved, The Kite Runner, Giovanni’s Room, The Girl With The Louding Voice, My Brilliant Friend, Pachinko, Small Island, One Hundred Years Of Solitude, The White Tiger, Half Of A Yellow Sun, House Of The Spirits, To Kill A Mockingbird.

    2. You need some Cormac McCarthy on your list! Blood Meridian is considered his greatest work but it can be a hard entry point. I might start with the Border Trilogy first.

    3. Seconding Kite Runner and My Brilliant Friend!

Also, Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, and On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong.
