My two favorite genres are murder mystery and fantasy, and I’ve always been intrigued with the idea of combining them. I imagine it’s quite difficult to pull off. Like, half the fun of a whodunit is trying to figure it out for yourself, which requires a clear understanding of the facts of the case. But in fantasy, the sky’s the limit! You’re not bound to writing about things that make sense! Anyway, I was hoping to see if anyone knew of any good books that successfully blended these two genres together. I read Rivers of London by Ben Aaronorvitch recently, and while overall, I enjoyed it, I thought it leaned too much into the fantasy side of “fantasy murder mystery” – any revelations as to the facts of the murders were basically just told to us as the story progressed, without any investigation into potential suspects or really any kind of deduction at all. In short, it seemed more interested in fleshing out how magical London worked than having me guessing over who’s doing the killing. Thank you!
