I’ve just finished Lessons in Chemistry and I really enjoyed how the main female character was written. I like themes of empowerment and challenging the status quo, accurate depictions of historic culture etc. I love the film Hidden Figures so fiction stories based in truth would be even better!

Open to all genres, not necessarily true historic fiction – I love a bit of fantasy too.

    Looking forward to your suggestions!

    1. I really liked the Memoirs of Cleopatra by Margaret George. The Clan of the Cave Bear series is really good. The first book does have some SA in it. If you do read it and like it Id suggest stopping after Plains of Passage.

    2. Pachinko.

An amazing read and very historically insightful.
Edit: It’s got nothing to do with fantasy but it is fiction, so hopefully up your alley.

    3. **True Grit** by *Charles Portis* has the protagonist, 14 year old Mattie Ross, setting out to avenge the death of her father at the hands of an outlaw.
