Once when reading either “The Big Sleep” or “Farewell, My Lovely” by Raymond Chandler (I don’t remember which) … I read a sentence which was so utterly perfect that I suddenly got angry as it dawned upon me that I would never in my life be able to utter a sequence of words so fitting to the moment.

I hurled the book across the room in jealousy. It took me 20 minutes to stop sulking and be able to carry on reading.

    Ever happened to anybody else?

One Hundred years of solitude by Gabriel García Márquez and some Cormac McCarthys books. I’m sure there is more but those came to my mind immediately.

I’m personally pleased it was Chandler who wrote that sentence. He’s by far and away my favorite writer.
