I was reading Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë. I can’t really talk much about it without giving away important plot points but there are so many characters that do nasty things to each other. The first time this made me angry I caught myself and sort of laughed it off that I’m getting angry about something that is not real. It’s not like the stuff on the news channel. It’s just a story.

Sure, I had gotten angry before when reading fiction but like surface anger, nothing deep. That’s normal. Part of reading is about feeling things. But with Wuthering Heights, I felt pissed. Like really mad. Several times I wanted to stop reading it, throw it out into the fireplace. I kept repeating to myself it’s just a story. Eventually I had to take breaks multiple times, sometimes days, before I was able to go back to it. And now it’s nearly over. Phew.

Have you had similar experiences with other books? Or with Wuthering Heights?

The $@!#ing Red @&$# Badge of @%#$@ing Courage. Being made to read it should be used to interrogate evil people, if such a horrendous act wasn’t considered a direct crime against humanity itself.

    2. Why do you think heathcliff and Cathy treat each other this way? Isn’t it odd when she says “I am heathcliff”. So much going on in that book, it might be my favourite of all time…the grave scene 😬
