We’ve all got books we’ve bought but never got around to reading yet, but are there any names given to such actions? If someone has a tendancy to buy lots of books in one go does that have a name? There’s, of course, “tsundoku” – a Japanese term used to describe a person who owns a lot of unread literature. But are there others for similar books buying/owning actions?

I ask because I’ve been going through a bit of a tumultuous time at the moment and I find myself buying books nearly every day – I am reading them (some of them) though! But it got me thinking, is there a name for that? Buying books when feeling a bit sad, for example?

    1. I’d call it BAD: Book Acquisition Disorder.

Though ironically I see this as a good thing.

    2. Hoarding?

Trying to buy your way of out sadness is usually called “retail therapy.” (Not really recommended, because, you know, you can’t actually buy your way out of sadness.)

    3. If you don’t get rid of them – hoarding books.

Personally I find I buy books frequently when what I really want is to buy myself the time to read books because I’m stressed and don’t have time. That insight helped me understand when I need breaks and encouraged me to buy fewer books on impulse.

    4. Bibliophile: a person who collects or has a great love of books

If you’re having issues I sate mine by transferring to library digital checkouts, and after a while of never ending free books my brain just sort of got it
