I need a book with a really suicidal and self-destructive plot that has a good story.

I have read The Stranger and Catcher in the Rye, The Bell Jar,but I don’t really like it. I really feel like nothing happened. Japanese people always did their best when it came to this theme. Probably because they always commit suicide after writing that kind of book too.

I have read No Longer Human by Dazai Osamu,The Life of a stupid Man, and Zaregoto (Book 2).

Twilight, book 2 New Moon deals with this. It was actually very insightful and helpful with my own struggles, so I would give it a chance

I feel like I suggest this story a little too much here, but No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai is one of them. Another story from the same author is The Setting Sun. That story made me feel depressed and lonely.

      The Summer That Melted Everything

      The Midnight Library

My Year of Rest and Relaxation

      She’s Come Undone

    4. The Stormlight Series by Brandon Sanderson.

A main protagonist Kaladin Stromblessed is battling extreme depression throughout

A Man Called Ove is a book about a man constantly trying to kill himself and getting interrupted by life.

More of a dark yet heartwarming story by it has a lovely plot.

The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break by Steven Sherrill.

It sounds a daft premise but it works really well. The Greek myths were real (and they are immortal) and the Minotaur now works as a short order cook in a diner.

It’s basically a look at loneliness from someone who is a complete outsider.

As I say, it sounds ridiculous but it’s actually a beautiful book and is my go-to recommendation for when people ask what book do I suggest that they’ve probably never heard of.

The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. The Vampire Lestat is the first book. Not necessarily about suicide, but has an existentialist angsty vibe that seems to fit your description.

Ishiguro is my very first thought, like never let me go or Klara and the sun. The main characters aren’t necessarily suicidal or depressed but there is that lonely, melancholy sensation that permeates his writing.

In a different direction, maybe sharp objects by Gillian Flynn. I couldn’t even get through it because the main character is such a depressing basket case.

    9. The Last Unicorn is my go-to book for a somber / melancholic mood mixed with magic and beauty but it’s an unusual recommendation.

The midnight library by Matt Haig was great. It starts with the main character attempting suicide due to depression.
