Babel by R.F Kuang. Its a 11/10 book, 6 stars, s teir. The writing is amazing, the magic system is wonderful, and honestly it just felt so real, so human.

The Curse Of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold. A broken ex soldier has to save his student from both a divine curse and the political enemies who betrayed him into slavery.
Bujold has written a number of other books in the setting, but this one works as a standalone and the main characters’ story is completed and they don’t appear again.
