I have a struggling student (11th grade) who never reads. He said he likes adventure stories. I heard the book about Shackleton’s adventures was gripping was really good but I never read it myself. (Not my taste.) When I looked on Amazon, there were so many different Shackleton books. Any recommendations? He reads below grade level. I don’t want anything that will overwhelm him but at the same time I want something good. Help!

    1. Yup (the one by Alfred Lansing) and if he has trouble reading, I recommend the audio as well. It’s so fast paced I almost forgot it was nonfiction.

    2. The adventure readers in my house also swear by “In the Heart of the Sea” by Nathaniel Philbrick.

Your high school library may have either or both of these books. If not, see if they can borrow from another local high school library.

    3. If he likes _Endurance_, he may also like _In The Kingdom of Ice_ by Hampton Sides, a similar fast-paced nonfiction doomed polar voyage, this time up past Alaska and Siberia in an attempt to reach the “Arctic sea”.
