I‘m looking for a good sci-fi novel of more than short-story-length that features a gay male protagonist, WITHOUT (and I can‘t stress this enough) the gay part being the main story line.
I just want a good, engaging sci-fi book with a classic romance subsubplot, but gay.

look into Samuel R Delany
Try Everina Maxwell’s Ocean’s Echo; I would rec her first book, Winter’s Orbit, but there is a lot of emphasis on the romance in that one [though it’s a good read, space opera mixed with whodunnit.]
Ocean’s Echo is more sci-fi/Star-Trekky, lots of action etc and the gay romance is there but it’s more of a subplot.
