My spouse is interested in history and politics. I have no interests in either so I’m not sure what to look into to buy. He is especially interested in the civil war because of where we live in the US. Thanks!

Not Civil War related, but *Boom Town* by Sam Anderson is fantastic and very compelling.

    2. “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin is my favorite book of all time. I have read a lot about the Civil War and this had plenty of new stuff I’d not read before. I absolutely love it.

*Confederate Reckoning* by Stephanie McCurry is an excellent book about the politics and power of the Confederate homefront, and how gender and race impacted the war.

There’s a good 3 volume set by Shelby Foote on the Civil War, called The Civil War, unsurprisingly.

    5. Can’t speak to Civil War stuff, but for general reading I recommend The Dawn of Everything by David Graeber and David Wengrow. Also, Apologies to Thucydides by Marshall Sahlins.

    6. Killers of the Flower Moon is very good + movie out now. Movie takes a different angle than the book, but both good in their respective ways.

In the Heart of the Sea – my history reader recommends this to everyone
