Not very popular (but good) Fantasy or Sci-fi

I want to find some Fantasy or Sci-fi books to read, but all the usual suggestions have weeks-long wait lists at my library.

I have a newborn, so I’m up at all hours of the night feeding my baby. I like reading an ebook on my phone while I feed her, but I’m running out of ideas of what to read. The books that sound good often have 5-16 week wait lists. I need a good book that is less popular, so that I can check out an ebook right away. I’m burning through books too fast with all these night feeds!

Some fantasy I’ve enjoyed: His Majesty’s Dragon series, Harry Potter, Spinning Silver, Ink and Bone series, the Magisterium series, the Scholomance series, The Name of The Wind.

Some Sci-Fi I’ve enjoyed: the Expanse series, Mortal Engine series, the 100 series, Red Rising series, Dune, Ender’s Game, Recursion.

I particularly enjoy books in these genres that have a sense of humor, like The Martian, the Thursday Next series, or the Memoir By Lady Trent series.

    1. I don’t believe it’s very popular, but The Falconer by Elizabeth May is my favorite. It has more of a young adult vibe, but it deals in fae and revenge.

Have you read the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire yet? Starts with *Rosemary and Rue*. (I just checked my library and it’s available with no wait, obviously that’s almost certainly not your library, but maybe!). Also the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne, starting with *Hounded*. (That one is not instantly available for me, but maybe for you!)

Any of Anne McCaffrey’s series – they’re popular enough that all libraries have them, but old enough that they’re usually in stock. Dragonriders of Pern, Crystal Singer, Doona, Freedom, Brainships, Talents. You’ll be set until kindergarten

    4. The Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner. They’re YA but they really don’t feel like it, especially after the first book. Really clever and fun.
