I wrote this post the other day and deleted it, because I wanted to word it differently.
I was reading his book Travels, which details about events in his life. In the chapter called Bangkok, Michael goes to a whore house located in Bangkok, with 2 other men. One of them was acting like a guide showing them around. Well the whore house was a child whore house. Michael described seeing girls possibly as young as 11 to 10 years old. Their guide kept trying to convince them to experience “extraordinary” things. Michael said he just wanted to get away from the sad children. Waited outside in the car with the other guy, who also didn’t want to participate.
In the car they just talked to each other, and that the guide came back saying they missed out on extraordinary things. Michael said him and the other guy didn’t want the guide to think they were chicken. This event does not sit right with me. I’m glad Michael didn’t participate, but disappointed that he didn’t stop the guy, or even express disgust with being around the guy. As someone who has worked with a lot of victims of sexual abuse, it truly disturbed me. I could not continue reading. While I love and own many of his work, it is hard for me to look at him the same.
