House of Leaves but only the part about Johnny’s life. I loved reading about him and his crazy stories meeting girls in Los Angeles. Please NO HORROR. I also read Echo by Francesca Lia Block and this is pretty much what I’m looking for..

Damn, am I old? Used to be you couldn’t walk through a bookstore without tripping over a dozen Gen X dude writers whose whole shtick was disaffected, drug addict (yet somehow not poor), LA guy.
Bret Easton Ellis, early Chuck Palahniuk, Jay McInerney, Irvine Welsh (though he actually brought some depth and class analysis to the table) are a couple examples.
