I’ve always enjoyed books that are set in far-removed places, like run-down mountain towns, the deep wilderness, or cults. I love when empty, desolate places are described so vividly that the settings almost become characters themselves. I’m interested in seeing what happens to the mind and to personal relationships when people are isolated and forced together, and what comes from those tensions.

Books I’ve really enjoyed in this family are Marlena, The New Wilderness, and Educated.

Fiction and non-fiction are both great, though I prefer fiction.

Can you recommend me anything? Thanks! Next to read on my list is The Great Alone.

Alone by E.J Noyes. It’s about a woman who participates in a psychology experiment where she experiences complete isolation out in the snowy wilderness for four years. Then a mysterious woman shows up. It’s basically an exploration of what isolation can do to a person and the importance of human connection.
