You might try the first book in the “Anne of Green Gables” and the “Emily” series by LM Montgomery and see if you can better enjoy and relate to either Anne or Emily. Plus, these treasured classics are free to download at countless sites (ebooks)
They both had difficult childhoods but they have different ways of seeing the world around them and deciding how to move forward.

Does she like fantasy? Most books by Tamora Pierce would be good.
How old is she? My recs will be very different for a 13 year old vs 16 year old

You don‘t specify her age, but i think the Outlander series is exceptional. Contains sex, violence, bad language and a bunch of other possibly objectionable things, including accurate historical presentation of events Juxtaposed with time travel (not in a sci-fi way). The books are long. I’d say a kid of 15 or more could handle it. Author is Diana Gabaldon. Good luck!

Howls Moving Castle by Diana Wynn Jones.
There are two other books in the series, but they are only loosely connected. Same world, different characters. I think? I haven’t read the other two.

Maybe a spooky one? “[Nine candles of Deepest Black](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/29875621-nine-candles-of-deepest-black?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=JjQtzT6nqD&rank=1)” is about a group of girl teenagers who play the ouija, and soon the deaths begin. There’s nothing too gross or anything, but she might enjoy that the characters are her age.
A Natural History Of Dragons by Marie Brennan
The Scythe series by Neal Shusterman
Shatter Me series by Tahereh Mafi
Carry On series by Rainbow Rowel
Strange the Dreamer series by Laini Taylor
The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater
These are all YA series that I LOVED
