    1. Nothing wrong with fantasy.

Maybe Agatha Christie is too old school for you.

Maybe try paranormal mystery. Check out The Sun Down Motel by Simone St James.

Or funny, no fantasy at all like
Finlay Donovan is Killing It by Elle Cosimano.

Or horror novel like The House of Long Shadows by Ambrose Ibsen.

    2. Just finished Killers of the Flower Moon because I’m seeing it tomorrow. Great, depressing non-fiction read.

Lonesome Dove. I haven’t read many Westerns, but this is likelihood the greatest one ever written.

Cloud Atlas. Maybe a bit fantasy/sci-fi, but one of two books that I cried while reading it. The other is The Book Thief (which I’d also recommend).

David Copperfield/Demon Copperhead – Both are excellent. Both are great tellings of contemporary society at the time they were written. And both are funny in parts, sad in parts, and heartwarming.

The Dark Tower – maybe this is fantasy, but I’ve been listening to the audiobooks as I drive to work, and it’s been a great companion.

    3. For comedy horror, try Tales from the Gas Station by Jack Townsend

For historical fiction, try Master and Commander by Patrick O’Brian

    4. Are you into Sci Fi? Would you like to be into Sci Fi?

      Hyperion – Dan Simmons

The Broken Earth series by NK Jemisin

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card

The Expanse series by James S.A. Corey

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro

Childhood’s End by Arthur C. Clarke

Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer (this one might be more fantasy like? Whatever it rules)

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

      Feed by Mira Grant

These aren’t even all of my very favorites they’re just the ones I think might be the most accessible

Edit: aww shit I gotta add Project hail Mary by Andy Weir to this, dunno if you’ll see my edit but everyone likes that one

How about something fantasy-adjacent: magical realism! Jorge Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Salmon Rushdie are some of the biggest authors in this genre. Borges is probably the most well-known, and his writing is all short stories.
