“You should read this when you’re 17” is always part of the recommendation. I hate that. Maybe it’s because people fail to read (or don’t want to read) beyond the whole finding-yourself-thing. I promise it’s all so much more abstract than that.
The kind of “spirituality” Hesse is trying to convey is so much bigger than the actual words, and it’s so magical. The identity-thing is only the tip of the iceberg.
The books are amazing at any age. People grow older and think they’ve done enough self reflection. They think they’ve found their identity already and fail to read beyond that part of the stories. I hate that.
