    SPOILERS

Firstly, great book. I rated it 4 stars and I really enjoyed (if that’s the right word?) my time with Demon and his story. It felt almost scarily real at times. However I do have some critiques I wanted to talk about, if anyone else felt this way.

1 – I thought Demons recovery was seemingly easy? For the whole second half of the book, Demon always said how he felt the need to throw up or get angry or agitated from not taking oxy. It REALLY painted this picture of “how tf is he actually gonna get clean?” And it seemed to just quickly happen in a couple pages?

2 – Due to the prose, which I can recognise as absolutely beautiful writing, I didn’t feel all that emotionally attached? Since this was Demon telling the story, and not us as the readers living the story if that makes sense, I did find myself not super attached to anyone outside of Demon himself, and maybe Angus. There were moments where I was like “I should be crying at this” but due to the writing I just didn’t feel much. Again, the writing IS great, just different.

3 – The second half dragged a little. The first half was incredible honestly, but once Demon gets to Coach, it felt the story lost its steam. I loved the final scene, but everything in between didn’t seem to have that same gripping feeling, apart from one or two scenes.

That’s about it really. I loved everything else. This was such a good read and I have no clue what to read next. Maybe I’ll finally get round to East of Eden
