Actually it was the book megastores “Barnes and Nobles” and “Borders” that killed the local bookstores. That happened in the mid to late 90’s before Amazon became huge.

That said the only local bookstores that are still in business in my town is the used store, which is doing quite well. Otherwise it’s Barnes and Noble and the grocery store shelves if not Amazon.
