I’m looking for books that feature monks or warriors, particularly ones that focus on intense, grueling training sessions. Imagine scenes straight out of a Jean-Claude Van Damme film, where the protagonist leaves everything behind to join a secluded monastery or training camp, pushing their limits both mentally and physically to learn how to fight.
I’m open to all genres—fantasy, historical, contemporary—you name it! I just really want to dive into a world where the characters undergo serious training to master their skills.

Do you have to have monks or warriors?
It’s just that I think Angry White Pyjamas by Robert Twigger might suit, it’s about his gruelling year spent training in aikido with the Tokyo Riot Police – and it was one hard and challenging slog.
It’s got all the ‘pushing limits’ thing you want – but also it’s quite funny and an interesting insight into Japanese society.
I wish I knew more recommendations for you because this request sounds interesting to me as well!
Elantris by Brandon Sanderson has warrior monks in it, but they are a mysterious side character/force. The events of the main character’s story line forces him to leave his life of privilege to become an outcast is a fallen city. He’s struggling to survive and figure out what’s happening.
Drew Hayes writes books about building skills as a superhero or villain in the series Superpowerds, and Villains Code. They are in a modern day urban fantasy context, but they do focus on characters honing their skills and learning how to fight.
The Poppy War. I’ve only finished the first book but enjoyed the series so far.
The His Fair Assassin’s series by Robin LaFevers
