Horror season is afoot, but rather than focusing solely on the supernatural spoopy bois, give me your top picks for novels/mangas full of psychological pain. Bonus if there are official hard copy editions available too!
Previous works/authors I’ve enjoyed:
– Daniel Keyes: Flowers fot Algernon
– Asano Inio: Nijigahara Holograph, Downfall, and Oyasumi Punpun
– Sugaru Miaki: Three Days of Happiness, Parasite in Love, Azure & Claude
– Osamu Dazai: No Longer Human
– Hideo Yamamoto: Homunculus
– Gou Tanabe’s adaptations of HP Lovecraft’s works
– Yan Lianke: The Day the Sun Died
I’m also currently working through Pyun Hye-Young’s “The Hole” and am thinking about picking up Natsuo Kirino’s “Grotesque”. Thoughts appreciated!

Ok, I’ll give you one – On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous. Made my cry, was pretty heart wrenching, beautifully written (the author is a poet). It’s about family, family history (the Vietnam war), relationships and loss. Plus it’s pretty short. It’s one of my favorite books ever!
