There’s a “castle” in my hometown at the top of a mountain that belongs to a local wealthy family, famous for their massive rum empire. The complex was almost exclusively used for city-wide parties, and it was actually common to steal things from inside. (Bad, I know. But that’s just how it was).
When my mom was pregnant for the first time, my very poor father stole a massive book about pregnancy from the library, and they said it helped them a lot.
This story tickles me.
My previous roommate recently gave away a gorgeous old set of books about mythological creatures. I have found a lot of books left behind in old dorms, thrown away in dumpsters, left in abandoned places, gifted to me by strangers, etc. These make me think about how we can often find our most interesting books in unusual circumstances.
What are the most interesting books YOU have acquired by unconventional means?

stealing a book from a library doesn’t seem very ‘by chance’
