It’s been a year since I read The Innocent Mage and The Awakened Mage by Karen Miller and I find myself still sometimes thinking about two of its characters: Asher and Gar. I just loved their personalities and their friendship. I haven’t been able to find a book with any characters that stuck with me like that, so I’m hoping you have some suggestions!
Some of the things I liked about them are:
– male protagonists
– relatively young (20s-30s)
– bit of a rough past
– loyal friendship
– not too much detail on romantic side stories
– I prefer long reads or books that have multiple sequels
– I liked that the story was set in a different world, but this is not a must

The lies of Locke Lamora could work. The main characters are Locke and Jean, who are inseparable friends (this is most present in the 2nd and third books)
