Hello. Years ago I read a story about a sad society. It was a English or maybe Irish story. Dark and grey, church, trees, a long path among trees to church, Catholic. It is what I can remember. I want some help to find that story or the writer’s name. Maby 1900 or 1800.

There are sooo many stories with that setting
**The Dead” by James Joyce**. It’s a short story from his collection “Dubliners,” published in 1914. The story is set in Dublin, Ireland, and it revolves around a gathering during the holiday season where the protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, confronts feelings of alienation and disillusionment with his own life and the society around him. The setting includes a dark and somber atmosphere, a church, and references to Catholicism. The story is renowned for its portrayal of Irish society at the turn of the 20th century and its exploration of themes such as mortality, tradition, and the passage of time.
Was it a poem? Sounds like Mid-term Break by Seamus Heaney. A 14 year old boy has to leave boarding school to go to his brother’s wake.
