I’m looking for something in the fantasy or horror genre that features an older woman as a protagonist. I read loads of fantasy and horror with female leads but never really come across older women in them.

Tad Williams’s The Last King of Osten Ard series features the character Miramelle (from his previous series Memory, Sorrow and Thorn) as a much older woman. I realize you would have to read the earlier series to REALLY know what is going on, but they are all very good books.

*Wheel of the Infinite* by Martha Wells

The Winnowing Flame trilogy by Jen Williams, starts with *The Ninth Rain -* more an ensemble cast but there’s an older woman who is a major character

*City of Blades* by Robert Jackson Bennett – this is the middle book of a trilogy but you can read it without reading the first one (*City of Stairs*) though I recommend the whole trilogy, it’s excellent.

*Paladin of Souls* by Lois McMaster Bujold – technically this is a sequel (to *Curse of Chalion*) but the main character in this book is only a supporting character in that one and you don’t need to have read that first

    3. I’d say the The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin certainly has an element of this, without wanting to give too much away.
