Hi! I’m shopping for a 9 year Olds birthday and she absolutely adores books and reading. She particularly loves fantasy stories and those simple middle-school-esque stories like dork diaries and the babysitters club.

She also always specifies that she *only* reads graphic novels.

I don’t read too much so I figured I’d come here for suggestions!😊

EDIT: I’d also like to note that she’s an excellent reader (better than I was at her age). We have already read through Percy Jackson AND Harry Potter.

    1. The Tea Dragon trilogy by Kay O’Neill is absolutely fantastic and has a great drawing style!

The Moth Keeper is also written by them and I enjoyed that one too! It’s a standalone.

Babysitters Club has some recent graphic novel adaptations if she hasn’t had those yet, I would also recommend Smile and Sisters by Raina Telgemeier. She might also like the Lumberjanes series by ND Stevenson, if she likes a bit of magic and weirdness! They’re so good.

My time has come!! I have so many suggestions:

      1. Lightfall by Probert – complete at three books

      2. Garlic and the Vampire and Garlic and the Witch – I don’t think there will be more

      3. 5 Worlds by Siegal – complete at five book series

      4. Okay Witch – two books but I don’t know if it’s complete

      5. Stargazing – others by Jen Wang too

      6. Tea Dragon Society – complete at the books but also anything by Kay O’Niel

      7. Witches of Brooklyn – four books so far

      8. Amulet – just had its… ninth book come out

      9. Nicola Travelling the Demon World – complete at four books, this is manga but is truly lovely (not at all scary despite the “demon” in the title)

      10. My Aunt is a Monster – this author has another good book too Seance Tea Party

      11. Squire and Knight

      12. Hilda and the Troll – this is a pretty big series, but much shorter books than a lot of the others

      13. Beetle and the Hollowbones

      14. Wingbearer – only the first book is out right now but it’s great

      15. Oddly Normal – a handful of volumes but it’s complete

      16. The Underfoot

      17. Pilu of the Woods

      18. Bone by Smith

      19. El Deafo

Ok. That’s my read list, without anything in my TBR.

    4. I don’t know if they are still relevant but I loved the Bone graphic novels when I was their age!

My daughter loves the Nightmare Before Christmas and Dracula graphic novels as well as Wait Til Helen Comes and some of the Five Nights at Freddy’s books.

    7. I don’t have any suggestions that haven’t already been said but I wanted to say you’re awesome for encouraging your daughter to read graphic novels she likes and not pushing her to read “real” books! My husband loved graphic novels as a kid but was forced to read non-graphic novels at school and it made him lose his love of reading, so it makes me happy to see you not only letting your daughter keep reading graphic novels but going out of your way to find more suggestions she’ll love 🙂
