I don’t have a rule. If I’m not coming back to it and looking for a chance to read and it’s just sitting there, I’ll evaluate if I just got distracted and need to put it back on the shelf and start again later, or if I think it sucks in some way and I don’t need to hang on to it.
I’ve stopped on classics like Ulysses and Don Quixote because I realized this is too amazing and I want to come back when I’m in a better frame of mind to experience it. I’ve put down Joe Hill and Wrath James White because it was poorly written, edited, or didn’t seem to have a reason to exist.
