Title. I want really depressing books with somewhat of a “light at the end of the tunnel” tone to it. I’m open to pretty much any genre, but I do have a preference for more mystical worlds/aesthetics.

    1. {{The Remains of the Day}}.

Also {{Hangsaman}}, which is essentially Shirley Jackson’s version of The Bell Jar.

    2. Two-book story, by Moritz Thomsen: *The Farm on the River of Emeralds,* and *The Saddest Pleasure.*

She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb

Or anything by Wally Lamb. Tragic with a brief light at the end is kind of his jam

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah, but honestly anything by Kristin Hannah fits that vibe. I also liked Winter Garden and The Nightingale

    5. Lincoln Highway- Amor Towles. The endings for characters are mixed. Not mystical, but really beautiful book.
      CW: suicide, death, childhood trauma
