I haven’t properly read a book in about 5 years since finishing primary school. I’m 17 now. I’ve been thinking about reading books now but not sure where to start Not a fan of books set back in time though, would prefer a more modern style book. Any suggestions and a small description would be highly appreciated! Thank you 🙂

      Mystery:

**Silo** trilogy by Hugh Howey (first book is called *Wool*)

*Everyone lives in a giant underground silo, but they don’t know why, other than something outside is deadly. One of those great “I know there’s some big mystery that will make all the pieces fit if I can get to the end of the story already!” books that kept me reading almost nonstop to the end. Each book has its own cool mystery to unravel. Apple TV has done a pretty decent tv adaptation (first season streaming now, and it covers 1/2 of the first book if you want to watch an episode or two and see how you like it.*

      Adventure:

**Project Hail Mary** by Andy Weir.

*I see this one suggested all the time for people who want to get back into reading, and I totally agree. It’s a really fun and funny sci-fi adventure. The main character wakes up in a strange room with no idea who he is or why he’s there. We quickly learn he has to save planet earth. By himself. It’s a great read.*

      Crime:

**The 7-1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle** by Stuart Turton

*A very “dark and stormy night” Agatha Christie, we’re-all-a-suspect-in-this-fancy-mansion-and-black-tie murder mystery with a really cool Quantum-leap-ish twist!*

      **Gone Girl** by Gillian Flynn

*This is one of those “everyone should read once” books with a phenomenal twist. The main character comes home one day and reports his wife missing. Any more info than that might give something away. If you haven’t seen the movie or heard what the twist is, you NEED to read this book.*

      Horror:

**World War Z: The Definitive Edition** by Max Brooks (make sure you get this edition as it has extra content)

*I’ll call this horror-lite. It’s written as a nonfiction oral history of the zombie apocalypse that almost wiped out humanity. Each chapter is a new story from a different person sharing their experiences before, during and after the war (the book is set 10 years after the war ended). Easy to pick up/put down since each chapter is kind of its own short story, just in roughly chronological order compared to the other chapters. Not a comedy by any means, but doesn’t take itself too seriously either. There is a movie with the same name, but it has almost zero to do with this book, other than there are zombies in both. This book and Project Hail Mary are my top two suggestions for anyone looking to get back into reading.*
