Hello! I’m working on a story of my own, and I need some help finding books with a similar vibe.

I love fantasy, and have read all of the YA fantasy of the 2010:s, as well as some of the big series (GoT and Mistborn), and I love the magical elements that comes with it.

With that said, the world I have created for my own story is a lot more like ours, and while there is a magical system, it is pretty simple, and there are no characters that can vield magic themselves. Basically, the magic system is primarily used as a setting and a plot-device to tell a richer story about its people and politics.

So, do you have any suggestions on books that sounds a bit similar to what I’m trying to write? I would love to read something like it to better understand how it can be done!

    1. Babel by R. F. Kuang is a great stand alone fantasy novel that utilizes its magic system in the way youre describing. While not the most simple in terms of concept, its usage, as the main form of technology, is very straight forward and is the main plot device. With a heavy focus on the politics, economy and power dynamics that surround the usage and control of said magic, the fantasy elements take a back seat in favor of the over arching social critique of capitalism/imperialism. Good book, would recommend

    2. Try Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. They also have other standalone novels which I haven’t got to yet but this one is solid.
