I love romance books but all of the ones I’ve been recommended recently are just full of smut. I’m fine with a little bit of spice but I want a romantic story that has a good plot and a slow. I love classic books like Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Leo Tolstoy but I am also interested in simpler more modern stories. Also better if the story has a tragical twist or some kind of dramatic flair.

I agree! I hate how romance nowadays are more smut than plot even though I don’t like it as much. Though, I don’t read classics as much. That being said, here are some of my fav romance books-
The duke and I (more classic, aka bridgerton)
Spanish love deception (hate to be basic but it’s good)
Things you save in a fire (has faint mentions of trauma though it’s not severe)
The Prince (spy girl series)
A thousand heartbeats (also fantasy if that’s ok)
This vicious grace (also fantasy, involves girl falling for her bodyguard)
Check and mate (adorable rivalry romance)
Geekerella (Cinderella retelling with geeks if the title didn’t give that away)
Something to talk about (two women if that’s ok)
Also, you should definitely checkout Colleen Hoover. She writes a lot of good romance, many of which are on kindle unlimited, and I think she’s so great at creating powerful characters that somehow connect and each story is unique which is why I really really like her books.
