I just finished this short debut novel, based on an IG post from Jeanette McCurdy. I loved McCurdy’s memoir so much, I started following her on Instagram. She recommended this book and I immediately placed a hold on Libby.

And my long await hold was delivered last night.

I am still trying to place exactly what I hated so much. It was beautiful written, I finished it in 4 hours and felt so letdown by the ending.

I’m open to the fact that maybe I’m missing something.

But this book takes you through trauma after trauma in a dysfunctional family. I don’t know how to do the spoiler thing so don’t keep reading if you don’t want spoilers.

How did she not confront her mom or boyfriend for sleeping with her boyfriend!!! I kept waiting for a moment that never came. And then the mom never meeting the grandbaby really bugged me. And not a single character seems to get any redemption or growth. Everything just sucks for everyone. Oh, and the world is ending from climate change so let’s focus on that some too. And if someone could please explain the ending, maybe it would help me not feel so bitter. Sitting on the sea wall, drinking like her dad, looking at all the different animals swimming around. Like, what is that supposed to tell me?

Would love to see a discussion and opinions on this one!
