I see a lot of suggestions for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. (As we should, it’s a wonderful book). However, may I suggest Turkish author Ali Riza Seyfioglu’s pirated: Dracula in Istanbul. Seyfioglu’s bootleg Dracula was written in 1928. It has the same plot, general timeline, etc., but it features characters who are Turkish (so have experienced the Turkish War of Independence, interpret what is happening through different cultural and religious lenses, and are located in Istanbul). It’s a real treat. You’ll recognize Stoker’s writing and encounter characters who are Turkish equivalents—something that I found particularly fascinating. It’s superb and if you’ve read Dracula and want it all over again for the first time, this is the book for you.
