So far the only one for me was[ Penpal](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/14578407-penpal) by Dathan Auerbach.

I’ve got a good amount of horror books in my reading list all hungrily waiting for me to read them, but the ones I’ve already read were all great and actually surpassed my expectations, such as the horror tales by the immortal H.P Lovecraft, more horror tales by the brilliant Clark Ashton Smith, then The Shining by Stephen King, among a few others. Penpal caught my interest for having similar ratings to a horror book I’ve read last month and absolutely loved and the fact that at least 2500 people are reading it right now on Goodreads, but alas, the book disappointed me like no other.

It felt amateurish, disjointed, uninteresting and incomplete. A couple of chapters created some tension but failed at the delivery. The portrayal of how children would behave and think was unrealistic. Many parts are a slog through the mud, yet the ending felt rushed and inconclusive, so the book is a slow burner done the wrong way. For some crazy reason I even felt like I was playing one of those visual novels from Japan, but a bad one. I really don’t understand the high ratings and amount of people reading it. The other book I’ve mentioned is[ I Remember You](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15852019-i-remember-you?from_search=true&from_srp=true&qid=DSP26VfIhq&rank=1) by Yrsa Sigurdardottir, which created a somber and tense atmosphere that was in fact scary, so I highly recommend it.

Now I wanna know from you folks: what horror books left you disappointed?
