Wow I finished dune messiah a few days ago and I like it much better than the first book! I like how Frank Herbert just leans 1000% into symbolism/allegory/etc and makes the everything so poetic and almost dreamlike. Everything is much more subtle (for frank herbert at least) and I LOVE the direction all the characters go in. Blind Paul walking alone into the desert to die is such a beautiful tragic ending and the recurring dreams he had of his moon falling out of the sky will always have my heart <3

I agree. It’s definitely tighter than the first book, mostly because Dune does the gigantic task of doing most of the world building so that the rest of the series can continue. The second book has the arguably easier task of tearing down Paul and his messiah-ness, whereas book 1 had to build him from the ground up. I’ll be interested to hear your thoughts on children of Dune when you’ve finished it. It’s my favourite of the series, which is a generally unpopular opinion.
