Hey!
Was just wondering if anyone knew what is the most complete collection or published series of Chekhov’s short stories in English? According to the site Prospero’s Books Chekhov wrote over 500 short stories and I’m pretty sure there’s not a single English language series or edition that has all of them but I’m looking for whatever is closest. I’m aware that there is a 13 volume series Tales of Chekhov with the Constance Garnett translations but I’d like to avoid hers if possible because she gets a lot of flack in general, the most common criticism I hear being that her translations make Chekhov, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy all sound like the same author. I’m aware that there is a series of books attempting to publish all of his stories in chronological order from a CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform but I hear it is poorly edited with a clunkingly literal translation.
