Hi everyone, I’m about two-thirds of the way done with the Fall of Hyperion and I just finished the part where >! Brawne and Johnny learn the true nature of the Shrike from Ummon. !< Can someone explain to me WHY Hyperion is a variable? I initially thought Hyperion was the variable because of >!the Time Tombs and the Shrike but Ummon says in a universe where the Ultimate Intelligence rules a variable like Hyperion cannot be allowed to exist which implies that Hyperion was ALWAYS a variable?? But why?? Am I misinterpreting Ummon’s story?? !<

TLDR: Why is Hyperion a variable? Did I miss something and was this question already answered in the book? I’m just too eager to know why so I had to come and ask here before I finished the book but if the question gets answered later on in the other books please let me know!

    1. I think this is a RAFO type thing. It has been years, but if I recall correctly, The Time Tombs are traveling backwards in time, but it is not actually certain it comes from the ultimate AI. I do not recall whether the other option has been explained yet so I will not say.
