Hi, feeling sad about relationships and a bit lonely. Suggest me a book that would be would be sad & meaningful, have beautiful prose or maybe even some poetry but also carry uplifting overtones that could make me cry happy tears.
Thank you!

The Archive of Alternate Endings by Lindsey Drager. It is sad, it is a little bleak, but it’s also really hopeful in a way AND it’s really short.
*The Golden Gate* by Vikram Seth. It checks all the boxes.
I started reading Khaled Hosseini’s *A Thousand Splendid Suns* by accident, but it turned out to be a sad and beautiful story about the lives of women in Afghanistan through the end of the twentieth century and the beginning of the twenty-first.
The Boy Detective Fails by Joe Meno. The premise is about a former child detective (like Encyclopedia Brown) who just got released from a psychiatric ward. He was there after a breakdown due to his sister’s suicide. There’s an air of melancholy over the whole book, but there’s also hope as he slowly reintegrates himself back into society. It’s also quite funny and weird. It’s one of my favorite books.
Fredrik Backmans “A man called Ove”. It’s an overall happy book, but has a deep meaning and also some very sad scenes.
Everyone in This Room Will Someday be Dead – Emily Austin
Has an anxiety theme but absolutely hits the poetic symbolism of loneliness and hope.
The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. It’s a hard start but so worth it.
Persuasion by Jane Austen. Simply gorgeous, largely melancholy, beautiful ending.
The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah!
