I was looking at an older edition of the book recently and when it talks about the attempts to teach the animals the alphabet, it says Mollie the mare ”refused to learn any but the six letters that spelt her own name.” The problem is her name is six letters long but only has five different letters. I think this has been corrected in newer editions but it’s still kind of funny.

I was talking about this whilst teaching the book once. I like to believe it is because of her lack of learning that she believes there are 6 independent letters in her name instead of 5 and that’s why we are given this narrative. Honestly, I want to think it was a mistake but my literary senses are tingling and telling me there’s meaning.
