Finished it an hour ago and it was such a beautiful book. Might be the best I’ve read in months. The prose was brilliant and not a single paragraph felt like filler. Looking for suggestions similar to this gem.
(Spoilers) favourite parts:
>! Stoner’s parent were such beautiful characters and to the point. Them hiding the pain of living brutally so that Stoner can study and then taking a full day sleepless journey to come to his graduation ceremony made my frickin heart ache. !<
>! Then his realisation about his marriage “Within a month he knew that his marriage was a failure; within a year he stopped hoping that it would improve.” And him falling in love with Katherine and then breaking up (knowing they are perfect but it will not work out) !<
>! And finally, Stoner’s conscience slowly fading away while he is swallowing pills after pills to keep the pain away. Knowing he is on his deathbed and repeating “What did you expect” !<
>! Tldr: Basically loved his parents’ characters (which hooked me in very start itself), his self-realisation about his life at different points, the love affair and the most beautiful prose about death that I’ve read (other than the ones in Tolstoy’s War and Peace) !<
