    1. The Romanov Empress: A Novel of Tsarina Maria Feodorovna is a novel, not a proper history book, but it was easy to read and the basic facts/dates are correct.

August 1914 (Russian: Август четырнадцатого) is a Russian novel by Nobel Prize-winning writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn about the defeat of the Imperial Russian Army at the Battle of Tannenberg in East Prussia.

For fiction I highly rec Doctor Zhivago by Boris Pasternak which takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War II. It’s depiction of the time was, and is quite controversial. The story of how Pasternak got it published and it’s subsequent popularity is also interesting.

I really enjoyed The Romanovs by Simon Sebag Montefiore – it’s non-fiction but highly readable 🙂

    6. W Bruce Lincoln – In Wars Dark Shadow
Deals with Russian society of that time.
      Well written non fiction
