I am looking for more fantasy that isn’t YA and that is set in a reasonably recognisable world – past or present.
Stories with lots of imaginary vocabulary, names, places etc. leave me cold. I love anything with complex characters and rich language. What have you read that’s really resonated with you?

I’m a big fan of Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings. Fitz is probably one of the best written characters I’ve ever read. I also love the way she uses the magic system to explore really nuanced human relationships. The first book is The Assassin’s Apprentice. Warning though- her books are all SAD
I would suggest {{Eye of the World by Robert Jordan}} except for your comment about the vocabulary words and names. This series has that, but also a very good story. If it helps, there’s a glossary in each book to help with the difficult to pronounce words.
The {{Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card}} may be more to your liking. It is a historical fantasy based in the US. I don’t recall any incomprehensible words. I also don’t think the series is complete, but I think it is a good read nonetheless.
